Chelsea Pensioners first to see special Royal Wedding Cake replica

30th October 2017

The Chelsea Pensioners have had the pleasure to be among the first to see a very special wedding cake produced to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Her Majesty The Queen and Prince Philip’s marriage.

The 9ft high, 500lb wedding cake is revealed in its entirety on ITV's A Very Royal Wedding (Monday 30th October, 9pm). Contructed on site at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, the cake is a replica of the one made for the Royal Wedding itself in 1947, and has been produced by bakers at the Le Cordon Bleu London.

On seeing the cake for the first time, Chelsea Pensioner Dewi Treharne said: "It's fantastic - the moment you first see the cake, you're in complete awe. I've seen the photos of the original cake and it is almost identical! It really gives a sense of the occasion it must have been. It's a very fitting tribute and I'm very proud the Chelsea Pensioners were able to see up close here at our home, the Royal Hospital Chelsea."
