Chelsea Pensioners mark VE Day 70 years on

Chelsea Pensioners are attending events across the country to mark the 70th anniversary of the declaration of Victory in Europe.
They are joining fellow veterans at national services of remembrance at the Cenotaph today (Friday 8 May) and at Westminster Abbey on Sunday.
Chelsea Pensioners are also attending Liberation Day events in Jersey and Guernsey.
The Pensioners who have remained at home have also been marking the anniversary by holding their very own VE Day party in the Margaret Thatcher Infirmary (our care home with nursing, photo below).
The guests at the street party were treated to renditions of war time classics, sang by the in-house pensioner choir. This was followed by sandwiches, cake and cheery chatter. Many of the residents attending the party have memories of VE Day and the war time period.
Audrey Merton was just a girl during the war, she said: “The war time brings back happy memories, this street party reminds me of the good times.”
70 years on from VE Day the Royal Hospital Chelsea is home to 88 World War Two veterans, help us to continue to care for the nations veterans by donating to our VE Veterans’ Appeal.
