Veterans Portrait Project UK arrives at the Royal Hospital Chelsea
8th May 2015
The ‘Veterans Portrait Project’, which originated in America, was brought to Britain this week by its founder Stacy Pearsall who is an Iraq veteran.
Stacy was contacted by British Army veteran Stephen Porteous to create a UK version of the project after he saw her portraits. He said: “It has been an honour to visit the Royal Hospital Chelsea and photograph the Chelsea Pensioners.
"They are representative of all the Nation’s veterans and I am extremely proud that they have joined the Veterans Portrait Project UK. It really was a pleasure to capture the images of the Chelsea Pensioners and has been a great start to the project.”
Stacey Pearsall founded the project in 2008 and has been taking photographs of veterans ever since. She has collected over 5000 images from volunteers in the US and it has been part of her own rehabilitation journey after being wounded in Iraq.
She said: “This year marks the 70th anniversary of VE day, I can’t imagine a more fitting time to expand the Veterans Portrait Project and to honour my British comrades and allies.”
