'A Royal Night Out' star Sarah Gadon meets the Chelsea Pensioners

9th April 2015

Actress Sarah Gadon who stars as Princess Elizabeth in the film 'A Royal Night Out' met Chelsea Pensioners yesterday to hear first hand about their experiences of VE Day.

'A Royal Night Out' tells the story of people celebrating VE Day in 1945 and imagines how the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret may have spent the evening with the crowds.

During her visit to the Royal Hospital, Sarah met Chelsea Pensioners Frank Mouque, Dorothy Hughes and Harry Puttick who all have vivid memories of celebrating VE Day.

Sarah said: “It was a happy and emotional morning at the Royal Hospital Chelsea. Hearing Dorothy recount stories from WWII reminded me of my own grandparents who served in the war and the importance of remembering their efforts and sacrifices.”

Chelsea Pensioner Dorothy Hughes spent VE Day in London and remembers seeing Winston Churchill, visiting Trafalgar Square and standing outside Buckingham Palace.

She said: “I absolutely loved ‘A Royal Night Out’. Watching the film, I honestly felt as if I was back there in the crowd. The costumes were very accurate, everything from the hair styles down to the shoes. It’s so true to life, I couldn’t believe it. They captured the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the evening exactly.”

With 2015 marking the 70th Anniversary of VE Day, Chelsea Pensioners are taking part in various services of Remembrance and national commemorative events.

'A Royal Night Out' is released in the UK on Friday 15 May.
