26th June 2015

On Saturday June 27 the nation will be celebrating Armed Forces Day and the Chelsea Pensioners will be attending numerous events around the country.

Armed Forces Day is a nationwide series of events that will be taking place all over the UK in support of the British Armed Forces. It is an annual opportunity to raise public awareness of the contribution of both veterans and present members of the armed forces.

Armed Forces week kicked off on Monday June 22 with the raising of the Armed Forces flag at City Hall. Four Chelsea Pensioners attended the ceremony and watched the flag being raised in the capital. Boris Johnson also gave a speech in which he said: “It is hugely important that we pay respect to all those who serve our country and recognise the incredible bravery and sacrifices of our troops, both past and present.”

The Chelsea Pensioners are scattering far and wide this weekend and will be taking part in different events, parades and activities all over the UK. They will be attending events in Swindon, Cambridge, Canvey Island and many other locations across the country. Chelsea Pensioner Gareth Pugh, attending the celebrations in Swindon said: “I have never been before but I expect it to be a great day. We were personally invited by the Parachute Regiment. I think it is important to recognise the role that the Armed Forces play and I am pleased to be going.”
