To mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday, a beacon will was lit within the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea later today.
The beacon was one of about 1000 being lit throughout the United Kingdom to celebrate the occasion. The Chelsea Pensioners were present at the ceremony, as were the Mayor of the Royal Borough, Cllr Robert Freeman, Royal Hospital CEO Gary Lashko, and the Governor of the Royal Hospital General Sir Redmond Watt, who said of the occasion:
“It’s a great honour to be one of only a handful of locations in central London to be lighting a beacon, and wonderful to be part of these nationwide celebrations. Everybody at the Royal Hospital Chelsea wishes Her Majesty a very happy birthday.”
The Royal Hospital’s Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant Mark Smith lit the beacon, which was situated in the Royal Hospital’s Figure Court.
