SPECIAL EXHIBITION

From masquerade to warfare; an exploration into the changing face of the grounds at the Royal Hospital Chelsea

What have Royalty, Mozart, hot air balloons, masked balls, orchestras, exploding torpedoes, polar bears and fireworks all got in common?

The answer is that the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea have hosted them all over the course of the last three centuries or more. In times of both peace and war the not so insignificant greenspaces have been the location of numerous independent social amusement, community and martial activities not just the renowned annual Chelsea Flower Show.

This exhibition will illustrate these with documentation and imagery from the Hospital archives to provide suitable stimulus to walk the verdant spaces so as to experience the attraction of the grounds to all who care to explore them.

9th-12th March 2018 | 10am-4pm | Wren House, Royal Hospital Chelsea
