South Grounds, Royal Hospital Chelsea

Masterpiece London is the unmissable art fair where visitors can view and buy the finest works of art, design, furniture and jewellery - from antiquity to the present day. The fair offers an unparalleled opportunity for new and established collectors to discover exceptional works for sale, from international exhibitors spanning every major market discipline.

Masterpiece Presents provides a platform for innovative, immersive works of art at the entrance to the Fair.  This year's Masterpiece Presents will be announced in Spring 2022.

In 2019 we were proud to showcase a sculptural installation by Phyllida Barlow, in conjunction with Hauser & Wirth, referencing the supersized ‘pom-pom’ works she first developed in the 1990s.

One of Britain’s leading contemporary female artists, Phyllida Barlow is well-known for using found materials like plaster, cardboard and cement, which turn the conventions of traditional sculpture on their head.

Brompton Cemetery Seed Sowing
Sowing wildflowers in memory of past Chelsea Pensioners

On 6 May, Chelsea Pensioners and members of the Royal Hospital’s grounds team joined representatives from the Royal Parks, the Royal Parks Guild and the Friends of Brompton Cemetery to sow a patch of wildflower seeds in Brompton Cemetery as part of the Battlefields and Butterflies initiative.

Chelsea Pensioner Centenarians
100 years old and still going strong

Recent research backs up the anecdote that Chelsea Pensioners not only live considerably longer than their peers outside (by over five years, on average), but that their lifetimes once they come to the Royal Hospital are extending, year on year. This strongly suggests that the care and community here contribute to greater longevity – as well as improving quality of life.
