Daredevils take on the Dakar in aid of the Royal Hospital Chelsea

A team of daredevil fundraisers are taking on the Dakar, the world's toughest car rally, in aid of the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
Led by former soldier Charles Sincock, the team are covering the incredibly challenging 9,000 kilometre off-road route through Argentina, Bolivia and Chile.
The Dakar, both a race and an orienteering challenge, pits long-distance rally drivers against amateur competitors in extreme environments. Teams need to cross rock fields, desert dunes and muddy terrain, as well as navigate up high altitudes and then tackle steep descents.
Charles, who was a Captain in the Irish Guards, has previously completed the rally and was eager to take up the challenge again, but this time in support of the Chelsea Pensioners. He said: “I have known of the Royal Hospital Chelsea for years through a friend and wanted to take on a challenge to raise money for this fantastic cause. Taking part in the physically and mentally tough Dakar Rally seemed a fitting way to raise money for the brave men and women of the Royal Hospital Chelsea."
This year Charles has joined Rally Raid International, a British team who participate in the Dakar every year as well as in other rally events. The team are self-funded with the help of corporate sponsors, but it was important to Charles that they also support a military charity.
Kate Marsh, Fundraising Manager at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, said, “Charlie is taking part in an incredibly tough challenge in order to raise a substantial sum for the home of the Chelsea Pensioners. They are an inspiration and we wish them all the best in their efforts.”
